Canada’s Trade with North Africa and West Africa

This report analyzes opportunities for Canada to diversify its trade with North Africa and West Africa based on macroeconomic, sectoral, and microeconomic indicators. It shows that current trade remains highly concentrated both geographically and by sector, but that certain trade corridors offer strategic potential, particularly in the agri-food, energy, transportation, and aerospace sectors. The study uses concentration indicators (HHI, Gini) as well as the GVCdtLab’s CCA/CBRA indicators to identify markets where diversification could reduce dependencies without increasing costs and risks. It concludes that diversification into North and West African markets should complement the United States and target segments where a shift is economically and logistically viable, prioritizing time constraints over geographical distance alone.

The report will be available in English shortly.
