Economic Impacts of Hydrological Changes on Maritime Traffic and international Trade in the St. Lawrence River Bassin: a Digital Twin Approach

At the Quebec Hydrological Research Conference (RHQ 2026), held at UQAM, the project team presented its work on the economic impacts of hydrological changes in the St. Lawrence River basin. As fluctuations in water levels, ice conditions, and weather patterns place increasing pressure on maritime operations, understanding their economic consequences is becoming a strategic issue for supply chains and international trade. Using an innovative approach based on digital twins, data science, and the integration of hydrological and geospatial data, this research aims to better anticipate future risks and support the adaptation of infrastructure and trade corridors to the effects of climate change.
The work presented at the RHQ 2026 is a team effort between a few members of the GVCdtLab, namely Bardia Amirmoini, Lisa Ronzino, Thierry Warin, Martin Trépanier, Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin, and Molivann Panot.
This was a unique opportunity to exchange with other academics on the subject , but also to put forward and bring attention to our Digital Twin approach, and all the research potential it entails.
